In possibly the gig of a lifetime, Honky Tonk Confidential with Bob Schieffer played the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville as part of a special show for Belmont University's Debate '08, the second presidential debate of the 2008 election season. Belmont alumni appearing with us on the show included Brad Paisley and Trisha Yearwood. Bob delivered his signature tune "TV Anchorman," and we rocked the house with Bob's & HTC's "Little Lulu and Sister Hot Stuff." Click here to see the video ![]()
One of the most fun gigs ever: the National Press Club Battle of the Bands between Honky Tonk Confidential with Bob Schieffer and Beats Workin' with the late Tony Snow (White House Press Secretary) and Skunk Baxter (Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan). This picture of Bob Schieffer and Tony Snow singing together is one rare image.
Diana Quinn and Mike Woods of Honky Tonk Confidential on the right, Sam Goodall of HTC over there on bass, with me overdressed on the drums. Everyone else is famous. Click here to see the video on YouTube ![]()
Jeff, Me and Dave rocking the Ritz in Detroit with Dave's originals. The blacked-out, austere stage at the Ritz . . .
. . . was very different than the Grand Ballroom stage at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City twelve days later, with Honky Tonk Confidential. But hey, a good drummer's gotta be able to play anywhere, black t-shirt to black tie.
Nice Ludwigs at the Waldorf provided by The Usual Suspects, LLC of New York.
Tony Bennett also performed that evening and autographed my snare. It was a rare privilege to share the bill with Tony Bennett. Truly special.
Diana Quinn of Honky Tonk Confidential at the 21 Club in New York City with Bob Schieffer and his assistant Kaylee. Can you tell from the smiles that working with Bob is fun?
We've played several times in New York and Washington with Bob, but our best trip (until we went to Nashville, of course) was to his alma mater Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, Texas, where, inside a clear tent the size of a football field, we debuted a new song about the injustice of the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport not being named in the reverse but proper order of Ft. Worth-Dallas. "Ft. Worth's where the West begins . . . ."
In 2008, I played with the Jack Elder's New HOTS Jazz Orchestra, giving me the opportunity to read drum charts again (Stompin' at the Savoy, Under a Texas Moon, etc.), and to perform regularly at the venerable Spanish Ballroom in Glen Echo, Maryland.
My good friends the Twangmasters, I love playing with these guys. Roy Richardson, Chuck Wilson and my seventh cousin Dan Chute. Dan has played everywhere, man (as in Johnny Cash "I've Been Everywhere") and is right friendly with Eddie Stubbs of the Grand Ol' Opry.
Swing Dance. The legendary Billy Hancock, on the right, played bass.
Whoa! What am I doing out front of the kit?
Ludwigs, with Top Hat and Cane snare.
Snare, cymbal and brushwork at WAMU-FM Radio session with Bob Schieffer for "Metro Connection".
Power rock in Detroit.
Yours truly, a different drummer.
